Big Moth

Another bug painting! I've enjoyed doing these and friend gave me this beautiful moth, called a polyphemus. The image is actually life size, as the moth was so big. This is oil on gessoed paper.

Fairview View

Here's a scene from Fairview that I started last summer and revisited several times until I was finally happy with the results. I played with the intensity of colors and altered the brushstrokes to really make it come alive.

Biltmore Bridge

Here is a painting I did recently on location at the Biltmore Estate. I am really happy with the freshness of it, and the vitality of color. I love working on location, and the Biltmore is a great place to paint outside.

Blue Crab

This is a recent painting which I really enjoyed painting. It is fairly large, at 36"x40" on canvas. It was done in the same way that my little bug paintings were, only much larger! I love the color of the blue crab, and really wanted to give it some presence. This piece is hanging in downtown Asheville at the Lobster Trap, a wonderful restaurant on Patton Avenue. Drop by to see it if you get a chance.

Lighthouse at Folly Beach

Here's a scene from down in Folly Beach, SC. This was done from a dock overlooking the marsh, with a nice view of the lighthouse in the distance. The marsh grasses are always fun to paint, as they come in so many different colors.

Hot Coffee

Here's a fun little painting I did from a simple cup of coffee. I often go over to the local cafe to get a cup of joe, and one day it seemed to inspire me. This is a small piece on paper with deckled edges.

Spring Bloom

Here is a small painting I did of a cherry tree in bloom. Everything is exploding with color right now in Asheville, and it is very inspiring to paint.

Little Pumpkin

Here is a small painting of a mini pumpkin from last fall. The format for this is the same as the bug series. It's oil on paper, with a single subject, no clutter. Sometimes I do a painting like this as an exercise in simplicity. There is something about the plain white background and a simple object that is easy on the eyes.

VW buddies

Here is a fun painting of a Volkswagon bug and van. They looked to me like they were hanging out, shootin' the breeze. The shapes and colors were a joy to paint, and it didn't hurt that there were beautiful mountains in the background, either.

Big Ship

This is an oil painting of a huge ship parked in the mighty Mississippi in New Orleans. I was attracted to the sheer size of it, but wanted to represent the scale, so I only painted the bow. Had I included the entire thing, it would have been a radically different effect. I also love the graceful curve of the bow, and the massive anchor chains. When I lived in Savannah, I was forever impressed by the ships that would come up the river, sometimes with the deck being at eye level, depending on the vantage point. I always found it somewhat surreal.

Green Barn

Here is a painting of a fantastic green barn I found one day while searching for a suitable place to paint. The sun on it was making the color really pop, and I stayed and painted on site for several hours. I finished the painting in my studio. It is done in oils on a wood panel.

Into the Clouds

This is a scene from Craggy Gardens off the Blue Ridge Parkway. It is a beautiful spot that is different every time I go. This particular day was pretty spectacular, as the clouds made it feel as if you were floating above them. You can see the parkway snaking its way around the mountains in the background.
